Klondike Whispers

KLONDIKE WHISPERS is a 3,600 word short story written by Canadian Supernatural Suspense Author Douglas E. Wright.

What would you give up to avoid hunger?

It’s near the end of the nineteenth century and not only has Paul Crooke run short of gold, but he’s run out of credit at Ogilvie’s Dry Goods Store as well.

The Yukon winter is harsh and its frigid temperatures can either bring illusions of grandeur or nightmares to those who need nourishment. Or perhaps both.

After searching his bare dilapidated cupboards, Paul decides to break into the local dry goods store that has refused him any more credit. Once inside, there are two guards waiting for him.

Both are known. Both are strange. Both are entities he wasn’t expecting to see.

Standing guard is a Police Superintendent and with him, a First Nations warrior.

Both protecting the premises.

Both, as alive as any normal human could be.

However, inside the darkened store, Paul realizes that these men are far from conventional.

Even for the Yukon.
