Spineless - A Short Story

Spineless - A Short Story

Long time friends and  recent widowers, Denise Chandlers and Billy Boscy, wake to a noisy thunderstorm after a sweaty night of lovemaking.
Billy scrambles out of bed and races to the open window where a lightning thread strikes the earth in the distance. But as far as he can see, the bolt might have hit Sandy Hill Cemetery. The burial ground where he has worked for most of his life.

From the graveyard’s entrance, and stretching as far as the eye can see, Billy and Denise scour the land of desecrated tombstones and burnt earth. After a few minutes of surveying the burial ground, they happen upon an overturned angelic marker, its surface scarred with a series of shiny painted images. Markings, neither them, or recently arrived Officer Dan, recognize.

Hieroglyphics.

Beside the overturned marker, in the earth, is a hole the size of a silver dollar.
A snake hole.
Only there are no snakes in this part of the country.
Billy sticks his pinky inside. He’s bit.
After snapping it out of the ground, Billy inspects a protruding white shard. Officer Dan warns him to go to the hospital before infection sets in.
But what they don’t know . . . is that there is an infection.

A deadly infection.

And not one of this world.
